Learning about the 1917 Owen Magnetic Car's Legacy at Tampa Bay Auto Museum
Welcome to the Tampa Bay Auto Museum, where history comes alive through a remarkable collection of classic cars. Today, we take you on a journey to uncover the fascinating story behind a true gem of automotive history – the 1917 Owen Magnetic Car.
Today, we’re diving into a piece of automotive history that's bound to blow your minds—the 1917 Owen Magnetic! This car was way ahead of its time, merging electric and gasoline power in a way that feels shockingly futuristic. Buckle up, because this hybrid marvel is going to take you on an unforgettable journey!
Now, let's get to the juicy stuff. The sole purpose of the Owen Magnetic’s design was to use the gasoline engine to drive a generator that created electricity. And that electricity, my friends, was what propelled the rear wheels. I know, right? Who would have thought! But someone did—Justice Entz did. He was working for the legendary Thomas Edison.
So, Justice Entz designed this incredible generator while employed by none other than Thomas Edison. It's almost like a superhero origin story, right? This groundbreaking work led to the creation of technology that was licensed to Baker Electrics and later sub-licensed to RM Owen.
In the early days of the automobile, inventors were trying out all kinds of propulsion methods, hunting for that ‘magic laser’ of the automobile world. Electric cars in the early 1900s were quite common, and the Owen Magnetic was part of this exciting experimentation period.
But over time, we forget. We forget that nothing is truly new. Today’s cutting-edge hybrids are all building on principles laid down way back in 1917. It may be more advanced today, but it's essentially the same concept. And why did the internal combustion engine win out back then? Gas was unbelievably cheap—it was practically a byproduct!
Back in the early 1900s, gasoline was abundant and dirt cheap. So naturally, the internal combustion engine became the dominant technology. But let’s not forget the incredible innovation that vehicles like the Owen Magnetic brought into the world!
