Cased Pair of Ducks Foot Pistols by Collis of Oxford - Circa 1782
Flintlock Duck foot pistols were first introduced in the 18th century, mostly in the four-barrel configuration, but variations of 3 to 7 barrels have also been recorded. Multi-barrel duck foot pistols were intended for use in a crowd or mob situation, as they ejected all barrels simultaneously in a “spread direction”. They were therefore very popular with bank guards, prison warders and naval officers, although they were very expensive to produce, so few could afford them.
This pair is attributed to a naval officer because of the engraving on the snuff box that came with it. The box shows a picture of Nelson and his great successes.
